Dr. Edward Mungai, the group CEO of Kenya Climate Innovation Centre Group, has today been awarded his Ph.D. in Sustainability at Strathmore University. The three-year Ph.D. entailed research on “Stakeholder Pressure, Gender Diversity and Voluntary Environmental Management Systems as Drivers of Corporate Environmental Performance of Firms in Kenya” which forms a compelling case for the adoption of voluntary environmental management systems among firms in developing countries. The study was inspired by the need to find solutions for the raging debate on what motivates firms to enhance corporate environmental performance. In his research, Dr. Mungai set out to examine if stakeholders, voluntary environmental management systems, gender diversity on board, and top management teams influence corporate environmental performance.
The findings of this study are of interest to business leaders and policymakers in advancing the global debate of implementing sustainability within the corporate level and for the company management in constituting talent pools critical for a firm’s strategic positioning necessary in a dynamic business world of evolving stakeholder interests. “My interest to pursue a Ph.D. was first piqued in 2015. About what I wanted to do with my life, I was very clear. First, I desired to be a teacher and to share knowledge on sustainability matters. Secondly, I had my eyes on consultancy as a global thought leader in sustainability,” Dr. Mungai says. “I also wanted to become an executive coach to empower other professionals on their journey toward sustainability. As such, the stakes were very high. A Ph.D. degree was the requisite tool to do this.”
