Gender Audit on Workplace GBV in Zimbabwe - The overarching aim of this intervention is to support the Employers’ Confederation of Zimbabwe (EMCOZ) in working with its members and policymakers to build conditions that minimise the prevalence of workplace GBV. KCL equipped EMCOZ with the evidence and tools to better support its members in preventing workplace GBV and supporting victims and survivors thereof, and advocate for the policy, legislative and regulatory improvements needed to prevent workplace-GBV more widely. The intervention was based on robust workplace and policy research and analysis, effective Public Private Dialogue (PPD), and targeted institutional strengthening.

Delivery of training and practical guidance/resources on dealing with GBV

GSMA Climate Tech Programme: Mobile Technology & Climate Finance - The primary aim of this research project was to explore how mobile network operators (MNOs) and digital technology – especially mobile – can be leveraged in LMICs to ensure that climate finance reaches those most impacted by climate change, and in a way that is transparent, fair, and cost-effective. The research was to provide GSMA and its stakeholders with an overview of the climate finance landscape, while also pinpointing the specific climate finance mechanisms or types that are most ready for digital innovation. Insights collected from desk research and interviews, as well as an analysis of ‘best practices’, were used to develop recommendations on how to incentivize collaboration between MNOs, climate finance intermediaries, implementers, and beneficiaries/recipients and other critical stakeholders, and ultimately help drive progress and support sustainable development.   

New Plastics Economy in Kenya - The purpose of the new plastics economy partnership was to spur a formal circular model for recycling PET bottles by initiating a circular linkage of plastic waste recycling stakeholders and to inspire other waste streams to minimize waste to drive recycling to full throttle in Kenya. 

The project aimed to enhance the diversion of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from dumpsites and landfills by establishing a good plastic waste collection system and increasing its recyclability into value-added products such as molded merchandise using 3D technology. 

Service Provided:

  • Researched and innovated on plastic recycling.
  • Developed a business model for filament and 3D printed materials in Kenya.
  • Developed a Training Manual for Recyclers and Waste Collectors.
  • Provided market information that was sought for the success of the partnership's research and innovation component.
  • Provided recommendations on possible innovations that should have been incorporated to make the partnership a success and for future scale up to the whole country.

Supported the preparation of progress reports and final report for the project.

Technical Assistance to Devolution and Climate Change Adaptation II (DACCA II)- The DACCA II program started on 1st January 2020 and will be running to 31st December 2023. In this second phase of the DACCA programme, the focus changed from partner driven community projects to best practice models for upscaling, replication and funding from County authorities. This is premised on the understanding that the devolution process in Kenya where counties are given better economic and governance opportunities has created an environment and practice where communities are accorded the rights to be involved in the hearing process following the terms for drafting the County Integrated Development Plans and the Annual Development Plan

Services Provided:

  • Enhanced the ability of the youth green entrepreneurs within DACCA II programme to develop and grow their businesses with climate resilient infrastructure and value chain projects.
  • Trained in and shared knowledge of green entrepreneurship best practices, business plan development, business management, and proposal development under a vibrant coaching and mentorship programme.
  • Conducted hands-on skill sharing via short-term technical assistance to the youth green entrepreneurs through on-site and off-site coaching and mentorship, trade attachment to the sector's successful players.

Supported the linkage of youth green entrepreneurs to financing and technical services providers.

Development of Knowledge brief on Circular Economy Solutions for Climate Action in Africa- KCIC in collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) conducted research under the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) to assess the role technology is playing in enhancing a circular economy within Africa. KCIC supported the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) to prepare and disseminate a knowledge brief on circular economy solutions for climate mitigation and adaptation in Africa. The research will guide policy and high-level decision-makers in identifying relevant solutions for Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) enhancement and implementation in Africa. 

Services provided:

  • Literature review to identify available and existing lessons learned on the topic of circular economy for climate action relevant to Africa with a focus on implementation, policy, and up-scaling of circular economy solutions.

A regional brief on circular economy in Africa was developed and disseminated based upon the literature review, inputs and feedback from the reference group, and guidance provided by the CTCN Secretariat.

Climate Change Assessment and Outlook Report for East Africa - The overall purpose of this assignment was to develop a Climate Change Outlook and Status Report for East Africa. The report aimed to contribute to the development of the new Climate Change Strategy for USAID, and also provide recommendations to guide USAID engagement on Climate Change issues across East Africa, after the re-entry of the US Government to the UNFCCC’s Paris Agreement and building on the previous climate change adaptation and mitigation achievements by USAID in the region .

Services Provided

  • Assessment of current climate change documentation through comprehensive literature review of past and current climate change documentation along with identifying status of climate change implementation across East Africa.  
  • Facilitated weekly virtual consultations and meetings to share updates and obtain feedback on the report with USAID based on extensive stakeholder consultation (with key members of the East Africa Community Climate Change Working Group, COMESA Climate Change working Group, IDDRSI secretariat, ICPAC and other relevant IGAD specialized agencies, Biodiversity Task Force, Agriculture Task Force, Climate Change Development Partners, Point of Contact or Climate Change Focal  points in various ministries, counties, private sector and agencies including the East African Development Bank, African Development Bank, National Treasuries, National Environment Management Authorities, Civil society Associations/platforms).  
  • Prepared detailed Climate Outlook and Status Report, drawing on the data and information collected, covering, Agriculture and Food Security and Nutrition, Water and related watersheds, Health, Climate Finance, Energy Transformation, Sustainable Landscapes, Climate Adaptation, Climate Change Ambitions. 

Environment and Social Due Diligence - Africa Go Green Fund for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Investments S.A. SICAV-RAIF intended to invest in Burn Manufacturing, an enterprise in Kenya. As part of the due diligence, ESIA was required and engaged KCIC Consulting to prepare ESIA report. 

Services provided:

  • Reviewed BURN's existing Environmental and Social Policies and Procedures (including the ESMS), in the context of the management of its employees and operational assets. The evaluation was based on the AfDB's Integrated Safeguard System (ISS) and the IFC Performance Standards (PS).
  • Reviewed BURN's impact metrics and confirmed their reliability, such as the number of lives impacted, reduction in household fuel expenditure, reduction in CO2 emissions, and gender proportion of employees.
  • Identified any E&S shortcomings in comparison to the national minimum requirements and the industry's best practices, including but not limited to the waste policy for raw materials remainders from manufacturing.
  • Evaluated the waste policy for the solar panel installation powering the factory, including the use of generator backup.
  • Recommended measures or "conditions subsequent" for an E&S Action Plan.

Prepared an E&S Assessment Report consisting of the assessment, findings, and analysis as per the points outlined above. The report also included a review of the key gaps identified, mitigation measures, assessment of compliance with industry standards, and the E&S Action Plan.

Enterprise Support Organization to Design and Implement the African Youth Adaptation Solutions- GCA and AfDB together launched the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Programme (AAAP) to support various initiatives under adaptation. As part of AAAP, Youth Adapt Flagship was designed and launched to support youth enterprises working within the adaptation space across Africa.

Services Provided-

  • Designed the competition and adaptation incubator programme, with a pan-Africa scope. This included the business plan/case, call for proposals, and development of SME/youth initiative selection criteria.
  • Developed communication and outreach material, and prepared the curriculum for mentorship, incubation, and coaching, including on investor readiness. Received over 2,000 applications from across Africa.
  • Organized a virtual high-level/profile workshop to launch the call for applications by youth SMEs/enterprises
  • Designed the evaluation process including the eligibility and selection criteria.
  • Managed the selection process for youth-owned SMEs including setting up of high-level jury.
  • Organized a virtual high-profile event to announce the winners during the COP 26 event.
  • Designed a 12-month incubation programme to support enterprises to ensure commercial sustainability.

Currently providing professional, on-going mentorship to enable the winners to execute their business plans, attract investments, create jobs, and support the continental effort towards climate resilience.

Sustainable Urban Economic Development (SUED) Programme Investment Attraction & Transaction Advisory- SUED is a £70 million, six-year programme supported by the UK Government through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The programme supports 12 fast growing municipalities to develop sustainable urban economic plans and attract climate smart and resilient investment for critical infrastructure and value chain projects

Services Provided:

Currently supporting FCDO in operationalizing of the Urban Economic Plans (UEPs) in 3 Municipalities (Bungoma, Wote and Lamu) in Kenya, prepared under the Sustainable Urban Economic Development Plan.   

In doing so, KCL is currently undertaking an in-depth review of the UEPs as well as comprehensive stakeholder engagements, feasibility and due diligence assessments of potential climate resilient investments and investors, at municipal and county levels, to identify strategic areas for investment, around climate resilient infrastructure and related value chains.

The overarching objective was to provide a clear, global overview of the role of mobile and digital technology in accelerating climate adaptation investment and financing in the LMICs.

Identified specific localized climate finance mechanisms (e.g., National Climate Change Funds, Voluntary Carbon Credit market) or types (e.g., loan, grants, equity, insurance, etc.) that were most ready for digital innovation and could deliver socio-economic impact at the local level.

Developed 'deep dive' case studies on at least three climate finance mechanisms to map the specific business models and their benefits that projects currently (or might eventually) encountered when using digital technology or engaging with technology organizations, including MNOs.

Provided practical, action-oriented recommendations for GSMA, FCDO, financial institutions, and other private sector actors, digital innovators, development organizations, and any other key stakeholders on existing and future opportunities for longer-term collaboration in climate financing.

Strengthening Bamburi Sustainability Strategies and Reporting 

Services Provided:

  • Trained the Board of Directors on structuring boards in the management and oversight of sustainability strategy and performance.
  • Conducted structured surveys and interviews across key external stakeholders of Bamburi.
  • Developed a Materiality Assessment Report.
  • Developed Bamburi's 2021 Sustainability report adhering to the GRI standards 2021 Update.

Provided advisory services on how to improve Bamburi's Sustainability Strategy.
